Basil Ice Cream? You must be kidding!

So I am doing a bit of an experiment, trying to recreate yet another culinary delight served up on one of my cruise trips although I am not sure how well this will be received by the Wilsonettes especially my son's who are more your sponge pudding and custard type to be honest.
Back in 2012 when I sailed along the Danube on the AmaCerto, my favourite river ship to date, I dined in the on board speciality restaurant one evening, Erlebnis, a Chef's Table. During a seven night cruise you are invited to dine here at least once, at no extra cost.
The meal was delicious, no two ways about it, all prepared in front of the 24 people who were dining in there on that particular evening - we were even greeted with a schooner of Sherry on arrival - seventies tastic or what!
There were a couple of desserts on offer and although I was a bit unsure what I would make of this Basil Ice Cream I decided to give it a go - I was not disappointed. It was strangely delicious, and I mean really delicious.
After dinner I stalked the Chef who kindly agreed to email me the recipe, sadly he never did but to my delight I have found plenty of recipes for it, in various forms, online. One of the most straightforward recipes is a Waitrose recipe, so I have gathered all the ingredients together and have had a bash at it this morning. I don't possess an ice cream maker so I have done the 'churning' by hand and it is currently languishing in the freezer, to be served as dessert after Sunday lunch. Much as I love it I am not sure what sort of reception it is going to receive but hey ho, I like living dangerously.
If you want to try it for yourself  the recipe is here.
In my experience there is little to complain about regarding cruise ship food, give or take some of the buffet style restaurants and mentioning no cruise lines by name, but just every now and again you are served with something that shows real flair and it captures your imagination - Basil Ice Cream being one of these things.
